Unlike type I osteoporosis which affects post-menopausal women, type II affects men and women in old age. Scientists noticed that there was a causal effect between mice having low levels of mesenchymal cells and developing type 1 osteoporosis, so they wondered whether the introduction of mesenchymal cells from healthy mice would reduce bone or halt deterioration. Amazingly the bone regenerated, with the damaged delicate interior structure (trabeculae) of the bone re-forming into healthy functioning bone. Further studies are required but this really is exciting news and may pave the way for treatments whichdelay the onset of old-age osteoporosis, possibly indefinitely.
